“Self defense”. You hear it, and hesitate. You think to yourself, do I really need it? Let me tell you the facts, and you decide. Fact: Every five minutes, several muggings, beatings, and at least one rape will take place in the United States.Don't believe for a minute that you are exempt because you live in a “nice neighborhood”, your ethnic background, or income bracket. Attacks on you or your loved ones can occur anywhere at anytime. The increase in crime is perhaps one reason why the demand in the security business has more than tripled in the past 10 years. There are hundreds of thousands of men, women and children of all ages studying karate, Tae kwon do, Judo, and other martial art forms. Many students find their chosen form to be rewarding, both physically and mentally. These activities take physical, mental and spiritual discipline on the part of the student. This type of discipline is great. However, many people want to learn an art form to protect themselves from bodily harm. During these classes, self-defense has become a lost art. Flashy uniforms, belts, non-contact training, start-stop training, and competitions based one a point system tend to conceal the real reason most persons start training. When you least expect it, reality strikes you right in the face, literally. You are confronted by a gang member who has no concept of life or death. He places little to no value on his life, including yours. There are no belts, no start/stops, pads, or “etiquette”. Where have all the hours in you dojo left you? Will you be able to react, and save your life, or your loved ones? If you would like to apply a “common sense” approach to your daily training, welcome to “Elf defense”. Elf defense is not a style or art. It has no boundaries or restraints. Elf defense is a system that is a wide-eye, holistic approach to your environment. If one phrase could sum up Elf defense, it is “Be prepared”. Example: You would not walk up to the deep end of a pool and jump in without feeling confident in your swimming ability, or your ability to get out of the water safely. Yet, we do not think twice about driving up to the cash machine at midnight to withdraw cash from our bank.I ask you, what is the difference?
